Two Top Prosecutors Leading Trump Probe In New York Resign

On Wednesday, it was reported that two of the top prosecutors leading the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into former President Donald Trump and his business have resigned.

Two Prosecutors Resigned

The New York Times reported, “The two prosecutors leading the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into former President Donald J. Trump and his business practices abruptly resigned on Wednesday amid a month-long pause in their presentation of evidence to a grand jury, according to people with knowledge of the matter.”

“The stunning development comes not long after the high-stakes inquiry appeared to be gaining momentum, and throws its future into serious doubt,” the Times noted.

The report continued, “The prosecutors, Carey R. Dunne and Mark F. Pomerantz, submitted their resignations after the new Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, indicated to them that he had doubts about moving forward with a case against Mr. Trump, the people said.”

This raises questions regarding the current state of the probe.

The Times quoted people with knowledge of the matter and noted that Alvin Bragg has been appointed as the new Manhattan district Attorney. He indicated there might be questions about the ability to continue building the case against the ex-president.

CNBC reported on Wednesday, “New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office is conducting a related criminal investigation into the Trump Organization, as well as a civil probe. Both offices are reportedly eyeing claims by Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen that the Trump Organization fraudulently misstated its real estate valuations to get better tax and loan deals.”

CNBC notes that the resignations came after the DA’s office had paused presenting evidence to a grand jury for an entire month.

Trump is still not charged with or accused of committing a crime

An attorney general spokesperson told CNBC that the probe “is still ongoing and there is a robust team in place working on it.”

Last year, Dunne appeared in court “during the arraignment of the Trump Organization and its former Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, who pleaded not guilty to criminal fraud and tax evasion charges.”

Dunne said at the time during the arraignment, “Contrary to the defense assertions, there’s no clearer example of a company that should be held to criminal account.”

Trump is still unprosecuted or charged with any crime.

Danielle Filson, communications director for the Manhattan DA’s office, told CNBC, “The investigation is ongoing. We can’t comment further.”
