Recently, someone asked me when Congress would have hearings to hold accountable government officials for their actions during the pandemic. There are many lessons to be learnt from the mistakes of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, Federal Reserve and the Trump and Biden administrations.
For instance, who will be held accountable for government-orchestrated lockdown policies that were in retrospect poorly designed, ineffective, and incredibly costly? For failing to recognize the virus sooner, who will hold the CDC accountable? What CDC officials are going to speak out about the utter confusion that the agency caused by its constant changes in messaging and policy guidance?
There are many failures at the FDA that I cannot list. However, I have not heard anyone speak of holding the FDA’s officials responsible for continuing to deny approval for COVID-19 testing.
Do not forget the explosion in government spending past 2020 without any plan for fiscal consolidation after the crisis. Also, the failure of the Federal Reserve to forecast the highest inflation rate for decades.
But, it is unlikely that anyone will be held responsible.
Do you think that I’m exaggerating. You think I am exaggerating? During George W. Bush’s time, it wasn’t hard to roll your eyes when it emerged that a small group of CIA advisors had sold millions in illegal torture techniques and were without credentials. Many of these agents are still employed by multiple bureaucrats. No one has been fired from the continuing fiasco at America’s southern border. There, thousands of families looking for better lives are made inhumanely.
Even worse is the reality that even if there were to be hearings and an agreement reached on major errors, this would not likely make any difference. I have testified in many government oversight hearings at Capitol Hill. It is clear that these are simply exercises for media coverage. A program that is unpopularly identified as underperforming or wasteful will likely continue to receive funding, even though it’s flagged unanimously.
Government Accountability Office publishes every couple of years a report on improper payments. This is the best example. It seems that the same criminals are involved in all of these government programs. However, nothing seems to happen and the amount of incorrect payments increases.
Rochelle Walensky, Director at CDC was recently questioned by the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations regarding the guidance given to schools about wearing masks. A number of members on both sides seemed uncomfortable about school masks mandates. Others noted that studies used to justify the continued requirement by the agency had been debunked. It was not in line with the available evidence or with what other countries are doing, without any apparent rise in health hazards.
Was this a different way to ask questions? No. Walensky recognized the “limitations” of the mask studies and refused to make any changes. So, even children as young as 2 years old will still be wearing masks to school. This is a frustrating situation, particularly since it will change if enough Democrat-led countries lift their mandates. This is not science.
The question is why we put up with this. This is partly due to the fact that most people don’t have enough information about complex issues. Additionally, The New York TimesRecently, it was reported by the CDC that they don’t publish large amounts of COVID-19 data because of fears that non-freethinking readers might draw incorrect conclusions. Even if they demand it, the public has little or no control over non-elected bureaucrats.
These unelected officials have thousands of the power to control our lives and not be held responsible. Unfortunately, this will continue until government size and power is reduced.
