Some San Franciscans may have had one too many helpings of “woke.” On Tuesday, three members of the San Francisco School Board were recalled in a landslide election.
According to the numbers, 79% voted against Alison Collins’ recall, 75% voted against Gabriela Lopez’s recall, and 72% voted against Faauuga Molliga’s recall.
London Breed, San Francisco’s Mayor, will appoint interim officials until the November elections.

Parents Questioned Board’s Priorities
In January 2021, the fight for parents started. Parents became frustrated by the slow pace of reopening San Francisco schools after the pandemic.
The school board apparently had more pressing priorities, like renaming schools because they were named after “problematic” – according to the far-left – Americans like Paul Revere and Abraham Lincoln.

Siva Raj (who has two children living in the district) was one of those who started the recall. He spoke about the outcome of the election and the inspiration behind it.
“The city of San Francisco has risen up and said this is not acceptable to put our kids last. Talk is not going to educate our children, it’s action. It’s not about symbolic action, it’s not about changing the name on a school, it is about helping kids inside the school building read and learn math.”
Californians pride themselves in being where the changes that sweep the country are made first. Tuesday’s recall election might be another example of that dogma — to progressive dismay. @henryolsenEPPC https://t.co/LyEqXlKBOd

Those For and Against, Records Defended
The school board recall may have had its biggest supporter in Mayor London Breed who stated simply that parents “were fighting for what matters most -– their children.”
Opponents of the recall called it “a waste of time and money.” They felt the district had more pressing issues, like a $125 million budget deficit and finding a replacement for outgoing Superintendendent Vincent Matthews, who is retiring.
Three of the three expelled school board members stood by their records. The San Francisco Gate reports that all of them said that their priorities were “racial equity.”
Evidently, San Francisco’s parents didn’t feel this was the right thing to do.
Lowell High School’s merit-based admissions system was being eliminated by the board. Lowell High School is an elite school with a majority of merit-based students being Asian. This is how a substantial number of Asian Americans voted in this election, according to SF Gate.
Chinese/API Voter Outreach Task Force claimed that 560 Asian Americans had registered to vote.

School Boards Being Challenged Nationwide
All across the country, parents are discovering that COVID (and the virtual learning that came with it) was actually a blessing in disguise. Parents forced to work remotely were able to look over their shoulder and see their children’s education.
They were unhappy with the results and began to attend school board meetings regularly. If it wasn’t to voice displeasure about getting the kids back in the classroom or mask mandates, it was about what they were being taught.
They are making their voices heard and standing up for their children. According to the Washington Post, there have been 91 recalls against 235 members of school boards across the United States in 2021. There are around 180 parent groups active in 34 US states.
Maybe failed Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe has figured out that parents nationwide don’t agree with him. The only ones who can decide what your children learn are the parents and not the school boards.
