Tursunay ZiyawudunThis Turkic ethnic group is known as Uyghurs. They are largely Muslims who mostly live in the northwest Chinese province of Xinjiang. The area is home to around 12.8million Uyghurs. Rights groups claim many of them have suffered from crimes against humanity by the Chinese government. A British tribunal found China guilty of “genocide against Uyghurs.” Over 1 million Uyghurs are held in Chinese reeducation camps. Many have also reported being abused sexually. Ziyawudun said that she spent eleven months in jail without any specific reason. Ziyawudun claims that during this time she was sexually assaulted, and even tortured.

When command and control societies seek to impose uniformity—from the policies of Mao to those of Lenin and Stalin—those societies inevitably abuse human rights in the process.
ZiyawudunShe said that it felt like the Chinese government was trying to eliminate her culture and ethnicity.
