New Report Calls Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Mental Fitness Into Question – Should Americans Be Concerned About Our Geriatric Government?

The San Francisco Chronicle surfaced new concerns regarding longtime Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein’s cognitive fitness, and some of the examples shared are rather brutal.

If some anecdotes can be believed, Feinstein is now 88 years old and has lost his ability to act as a lawyer.

One member of Congress, who is at least fifteen years old and has been acquainted with Feinstein since childhood, relayed a particular episode. They had to repeatedly introduce themselves to Senator Feinstein throughout the meeting. Feinstein kept repeating the exact same questions.

The unnamed Rep. said of the incident, “I have worked with her for a long time and long enough to know what she was like just a few years ago: always in command, always in charge, on top of the details, basically couldn’t resist a conversation where she was driving some bill or some idea. All of that is gone.”

A hairy situation, considering Feinstein isn’t up for re-election in 2022.

Are you mentally fit?

And it’s not just that lone Rep. who is concerned. San Fransisco Chronicle reports that a variety of individuals have expressed similar concerns to Senators including four Democrats and three former Feinstein staffers.

After serving as the Mayor of San Francisco for ten years, Senator Feinstein was elected first to the Senate in 1992. 

She currently services on the Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Judiciary and Appropriations Committees – places where you need a clear head.

This isn’t the first time rumors of colleague concerns over Senator Feinstein’s mental acuity have been raised.

Jane Mayer from the New Yorker wrote in 2020 that Democratic colleagues attempted to convince her to quit following concerning episodes where she asked Jack Dorsey repeated questions.

Barbara Boxer was a former Democratic California senator She was also urged to step down.

It is becoming more common to ask questions about cognitive ability, mental well-being and political status. A review of the 117th Congress suggests that it’s the oldest, on average, of any CongressAt least 20 years agoThis is why it’s so popular.

This question also affects our courts. A 2010 ProPublica SurveyAround 12% of Federal District Judges and Circuit Judges were aged 80 or more. 

Given that elected officials and judges make significant life-altering decisions on behalf of the American people, it isn’t unreasonable for citizens to raise concerns over their cognitive abilities. And interestingly enough, Nancy Pelosi of all people introduced a bill a few years ago that would establish a panel to determine a president’s mental fitness.

The bill The panel would be composed of experts who serve for four years and are appointed by each party in Congress. This board could include former Presidents and Cabinet Secretaries. 

Pelosi stated that the bill did not relate to Trump at the time, but future presidents. Now that the President is a Democrat, there isn’t much motivation on Nancy Pelosi’s part to press this bill any further.

There is fear – rightly so – that cognitive testing could be weaponized by opposing political parties. Some speculate that Senator Feinstein’s recent report was based on political attacks rather than a concern. It would be crucial to have a transparent, fair and scientific process.

Cognitive testing for older individuals isn’t new in a lot of ways. For example, Charlotte Alter from Time pointed out that many states require anyone over 70 to take additional cognitive testing to meet driver’s license renewal requirements.

Surely creating laws that affect 320+ million Americans and voting on policies that have the potential to affect the entire planet are more important than a driver’s license. 

According to the American Academy of Neurology, at least 15% of patients are affected by this.Over 75 percent of people have cognitive impairment. Here are the age ranges of some of our most prominent politicians for your reference:

  • President Joe Biden: 
  • Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House: 82
  • Senator Mitch McConnell: 80

All of this being said, the majority of Americans across all political lines believe that there should be an age limit on politicians.

According to Dr. Marc Siegel, cognitive problems can result from having a subarachnoid hemorhage or open brain aneurysm surgery. 

In 1988, President Biden received two of these repairs as well as a brain injury.

America is a country that the world trusts for strength and leadership. The world looks to America because of the increasing tensions between China, North Korea, and the ongoing war between Russia, and Ukraine.

As stated in the below clip from Sky News Australia, it is “increasingly clear that America’s weakness can have damaging consequences.”

Too far gone

The President’s age is our perceived weakness. While at times the President’s gaffes are brushed aside as either humorous or just an example of ‘usual Joe’ antics, the mere possibility – denied by official channels and fact-checkers, of course – that he or other elected leaders are suffering from cognitive decline poses a risk to our national security. 

Senator Feinstein’s term runs through the end of 2024. With rumors that her staff is doing much of the work and that she is incapable of fulfilling her job, one can’t help but raise an eyebrow at her apparent plans to run for reelection.

She filed paperwork in January last year to run for reelection by 2024.

It shouldn’t end this way for her. She deserves better. She is being treated unfairly by those who believe they can serve her or honour her by brushing all of it under the rug.

In 2024, Senator Feinstein will turn 91.
