Are doctors prescribing opioids for over-treating their patients in America?
This was the topic of the Soho Forum discussion held in Manhattan’s Sheen Center.
Adriane Fugh-Berman supported the assertion, “America’s opioid crisis is due to doctors treating patients with opioids.” As a Georgetown University Medical Center professor, she is also a doctor. According to her, the reason for overdose is due to doctors being convinced that opioids are safe and effective by pharmaceutical companies. This led eventually to rising addiction rates.
Jeffrey Singer is a surgeon and senior fellow at Cato Institute. He voted against. According to Singer, the rates of opioid overdoses as well as the prescription rate for the drug by physicians aren’t related. He claimed that drug prohibition was the real problem.
Moderator was Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein.
