Canada’s Public Health Agency stated that it had tracked 33 million cell phones to see where people went during COVID-19 lockdowns. Although the agency stated it had collected this data because of “the urgent nature of the pandemic”, it announced that it would continue to gather cell phone data for as long as five years. According to the agency, it requires the contractor responsible for the program’s management to remove all information that may identify individual.
