Sweden and Denmark have announced Tuesday that Moderna COVID vaccinations will be stopped for anyone younger than 30 due to potential side effects.

Wednesday’s announcement by the Swedish Health Authority cited data that showed an increase in the risk of developing heart disease. This was a factor for suspending treatment for people aged under 30. Denmark won’t give the shot to people younger than 18 years old.

Moderna shares dropped as high as 5.3% during New York trades.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and are acting rapidly to ensure that Covid-19 vaccinations are constantly as safe as possible, while also providing protection,” said Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s chief epidemiologist.

The two countries recommended Pfizer Inc.’s and BioNTech SE’s rival vaccine as a replacement. Each vaccine uses messenger RNA technology in order to trigger an immune reaction.
