White House Easter Egg Roll, a tradition event that is loved by both parents and kids, has become a highlight of Easter celebrations in Washington, D.C. Following a two year hiatus, COVID will see the Easter Egg Roll return to Washington in 2022.
If a 2021 photo op is any indication, First Lady Jill Biden will be reversing one decision by predecessor Melania Trump that was seemingly “controversial” enough to deserve a callout in Trump-era press secretary Stephanie Grisham’s tell-all book released late last year.

Melania Trump Easter Bunny ‘Controversy’
In “I’ll Take Your Questions Now,” Grisham details an incident where she says the Easter Bunny himself was forced to “strip” at the command of none other than First Lady Melania Trump.

While this incident “exposed” by Grisham and also reported by The Hill sounds rather nefarious – especially when set in the context of a children’s event – the truth of it is quite vanilla.
The story is that the former First Lady of fashion and the Easter Bunny were not in agreement regarding event attire. Melania asked the Easter Bunny to remove her vest prior to greeting children at the Easter Egg Roll 2017.
It’s a terrible, embarrassing secret!

National media even caught the spectacle. I should warn you, the Easter Bunny’s naked form in the Fox Business tweet below may be too shocking for some viewers. When viewing and sharing, please use caution.
Also please remember, Melania is European – they are a little more liberal when it comes to nudity.

Melania Trump is however not immune to attack. Remember when Bette Midler got hammered for mocking Melania Trump and calling her an ‘illegal alien’?
While Melania axed the vest, FLOTUS Jill Biden wholeheartedly embraced the Easter Bunny’s former fashion and even added a coordinating mask (of course!) In 2021, during a quick photo shoot.

Some might argue that the vest is iconic. Take a look at this throwback photograph from the Clinton administration. That same, worn-looking maroon vest was on the White House Easter Bunny’s 1998 outfit.
Today is 24 years since the White House Easter Egg Roll first “cybercast” over the Internet. It was open to children between three and six years old and took place on South Lawn, from 10am-2pm. https://t.co/RSwzlMCqpg #EasterEggRoll pic.twitter.com/eWuHQFNLJR

History of the White House Easter Egg Roll
The history of the event can be fascinating for history enthusiasts.
Back in the 1870’s, children enjoyed rolling eggs down Capitol Hill on Easter Monday. As the event’s popularity grew so did the crowds. The event was so popular that it took its toll on Capitol’s beauty.
Congress took immediate action, passing a law 1876 that prohibits Capitol grounds from being used to be a playground.
Rutherford B. Hayes (father of 8 children) was evidently sympathetic to the suffering of these kids.
The 19th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, invited the children to roll their eggs at the White House in 1878. The annual tradition began, and it continues to be practiced almost 150 years later.
White House Easter Egg Roll for 2022
Each year, the annual event continues to gain popularity. A lottery determines the number of attendees.
April 18 will be the date for the White House Easter Egg Roll 2022. Closed March 31, the ticket lottery for the 2022 event was closed.
You can be sure to see Easter Bunny in his trademark maroon vest again if Jill Biden says so.
There will also be a traditional egg roll and games on the South Lawn. The past guests included Newsies and Fifth Harmony as well Jordin sparks, Austin Mahone (Coco Jones), Sesame Street and The Wanted.

Interestingly, the WhiteHouse.gov information page for this year’s Easter Egg roll includes no mention of Trump-era events.
The ‘Through The Years’ section reads, “Take a hop back in time and view the Easter Egg Roll pages from whitehouse.gov from the Clinton, Bush and Obama years (1993-2016).”
However, the ‘History Of The White House Egg Roll’ section is up-to-date enough to include this more recent reference:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Easter Egg Rolls were cancelled for 2020 and 2021.
Curious what it’s like to attend the White House Easter Egg Roll? This is more than an hour worth of footage taken at the White House Easter Egg Roll 2019. It was hosted by Donald Trump and Melania. You can also see that the Easter Bunny was naked in 2019, as you will notice. Those poor children!
You can learn more about this popular Easter tradition on the White House Historical Association’s website.
