Volunteer Park Trust member Patty Helberg will again be helping people work on their morning sun salutations during a summer yoga series in the park.

“Last year was the first year that I did it. I joined the Volunteer Park Trust a little over a year ago, and we were all talking about events we could do to bring visibility to the park,” Helberg said, “and I thought it would be a fun thing to do for free, to donate my time.”

Helberg has been practicing yoga for 12 years, and teaching on and off for the past six. She was trained at Seattle Yoga Arts, and is certified in Vini and Anusara Yoga.

“My style of yoga is very alignment focused, so practicing safe yoga for your body,” she said, adding she offers modifications for less limber participants, as well as more difficult poses for people wanting a challenge.

For people looking to join in on group yoga in Volunteer Park, sessions run 8:30-9:45 a.m. every Wednesday from July 12 to Aug. 30, but rain cancellations are a possibility.

“There’s something really wonderful about practicing outside,” Helberg said, “you’re in the fresh air.”

Participants are encouraged to bring their own mats, as Helberg will have a limited amount to loan.

“If we’re going to do anything on the ground, being in the grass is kind of not great,” she said.

Helberg said one reason for offering the free yoga sessions is to bring awareness to ways people can get involved with the Volunteer Park Trust.

“I always let people know if they want to come and help, there’s work parties and stuff like that,” she said.

The trust spruces up Volunteer Park during work parties on the second Saturday of every month. The next is 10 a.m. to noon July 8. People can find out where by reading instructions at the Black Sun sculpture.
