Get Back!

You should watch the newly-released Beatles documentary streaming exclusively on Disney+. This is an incredible video documentary.

The story behind the movie’s creation is probably something you have seen in the flurry of publicity. The band decided in January 1969 that they would do a live performance with brand new songs. They would perform their first live performance in three years. This was after spending the majority of 1963-1966 touring, performing to raucous crowds.  They created many masterpieces over the following three years that changed pop music forever. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Magical Mystery TourPlease see the following: BeatlesThe “White Album” – A burst of creative music that has few analogs throughout the history of popular and classical music.

Three weeks was all they had to come up with a new set. It culminated in the spectacular “rooftop concerts” at Apple Records as well as the two final studio albums. Abbey Road It’s possible). Michael Lindsay-Hogg filmed the entire process over three weeks. This resulted in hundreds of hours of video. Peter Jackson has made 9 hours that show them writing new music.

The music and musicianship were something I expected, and they are. I still consider them to be the greatest band ever.

Unprepared for the emotions, even the heart-breakingness, I discovered it to be. First, let’s not forget the backstory many people carry in their heads. Personally speaking, the Beatles were a constant presence in my childhood (and the lives of most people I know). They were a big part of my youth (the Ed Sullivan Show performances) and my senior year of college (the release of Let it beThere were many people who had a greater impact on my life than The Beatles. The Beatles were a big part of my growing-up years. It was quite powerful to have the feeling of having been able to share the music for those three weeks.

There’s also a terribly sad feeling to this, as we know that John and John wouldn’t be playing together again in band. They would have a hard time communicating with one another in the next 10 years. John’s death would occur on that date forty years ago.

But, aside from nostalgia, there isn’t anything that I have ever read or seen that conveys this feeling. CollectiveThe film’s artistic expression is amazing. The way they would take little snippets of things – stuff that didn’t really sound terribly good at the start – and play around with them, discarding some and turning some – many – into little rock-and-roll masterpieces (Get Back, The Long and Winding Road, Two of Us, Don’t Let Me Down, Let it Be… ) is pretty breath-taking. The film has a surprising number of lame elements. As they experiment with harmonies that fail, lyrics that don’t work and keyboard parts that don’t work as well as dopey rhymes and rhythms that make no sense, it sounds quite boring. It’s almost like they have opened the gates to heaven when they get it right.

It is a great service and I cannot recommend it enough. For $7.99, it is definitely worth it. You may not have the time to spend 9+hours digging into it, but you will enjoy it.
