There is a lot of vagueness in how construction waste recycling gets described, and the practical truth is more specific and more useful.
Some materials have a genuine, established recovery route. Some do not, whatever anybody says. And the single factor that decides which category your debris falls into is not the hauler you choose. It is whether the material was kept separate or thrown in together.
The Materials With a Real Route
Concrete, brick and block. Clean concrete can be crushed and reused as aggregate, and this is one of the most established recovery routes in construction. Crushed concrete goes into road base, fill and new aggregate. The condition is cleanliness: concrete with rebar is fine, concrete mixed with drywall and packaging is not.
Metal. Scrap metal has resale value by weight, which makes it the one category with a positive economic pull rather than a cost. Steel, copper, aluminum and brass all have buyers. Appliances, ductwork, pipe, wiring, siding, roofing and structural steel all qualify.
Clean wood. Untreated dimensional lumber has routes into mulch, engineered board and biomass. Treated, painted and composite wood generally does not.
Cardboard. Packaging from new fixtures, appliances and materials is a straightforward recycling stream and it is a surprisingly large share of a renovation’s volume.
Asphalt shingles. Recoverable in some markets, into paving material. This one varies more by location than the others, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
The Materials That Mostly Are Not
Being straight about this is more useful than optimism.

The bottom two rows are the point of this article. Contaminated material loses its recycling route, and mixing is a form of contamination. A load of clean concrete is a resource. The same concrete with drywall dust, packaging and a broken window in it is waste.
Why Separation at the Source Wins
Mixed debris is more expensive to sort than separated debris, and on most loads it is not economic to sort at all.
The reason is straightforward. Separating materials by hand after the fact is labor, and labor costs more than the recovered material is worth in nearly every case. So a mixed load goes to landfill because sorting it does not pay, not because the materials were unrecoverable.
Source separation preserves material value. Keeping concrete in one place and general debris in another during the job costs nothing except a decision, and it is what determines the outcome.
On a job with genuinely large volumes of a single material, ask about a dedicated container. Haulers price clean concrete or clean metal differently from mixed debris precisely because the disposal route is different, so separating can reduce your cost as well as the landfill volume.
The Metal Exception
Metal deserves its own mention because it is the one category where separating can put money back rather than merely saving some.
Scrap yards buy by weight and by type. Copper and brass are worth substantially more than steel. A renovation that removes old ductwork, copper pipe, a cast iron tub, aluminum siding or a few appliances is producing material with real value.
Two practical notes. Appliances containing refrigerant need the refrigerant evacuated by a certified technician before scrapping, so a fridge is not simply a metal item. And whether it is worth the trip depends on volume, since a single load of light steel may not cover the fuel.
For a full renovation with substantial metal, it is usually worth setting aside. For a bathroom refit, probably not.
What a Diversion Rate Actually Means
You will occasionally see haulers advertise a diversion rate, and it is worth understanding what the number describes.
A diversion rate measures what avoided landfill, as a share of total tonnage handled. A high rate reflects the mix of material a company handles as much as its effort. A hauler doing mostly clean concrete will have a high rate almost automatically. One doing mostly mixed residential debris will not, however carefully it operates.
So it is a weak basis for choosing between companies, and a reasonable question to ask if diversion matters to you: not what their rate is, but whether they offer dedicated containers for clean material and where that material goes.
That question gets a specific answer or a vague one, and the difference tells you more than any percentage.
Three Things Worth Pulling Out First
Before the container arrives, three categories are worth separating, and each takes minutes.
Metal. A pile by the garage. Worth money, easy to identify, and it is the material most likely to be recovered.
Anything reusable. Doors, cabinets in decent condition, fixtures, appliances that work, quality timber. Building material reuse centers, local marketplaces and neighbors absorb a surprising amount of this. It is the highest form of recovery, since reusing something skips the recycling process entirely.
Hazardous items. Paint, solvents, batteries, tubes, tires, anything with refrigerant. These cannot go in the container regardless, so pulling them first prevents both a landfill rejection and a charge-back.
Once those three are out, what remains is genuinely mixed debris, and that is what the container is for.
The Reuse Route People Forget
Worth expanding, because it is the cheapest and most effective option and almost nobody plans for it.
A kitchen being replaced because the owner wants a new one usually contains cabinets that work perfectly well. Doors, light fixtures, sinks, vanities and appliances in working order all have takers. Reuse centers accept donations, local marketplaces move things quickly, and contractors sometimes want materials for smaller jobs.
The constraint is timing rather than demand. Items have to come out carefully rather than being smashed, and somebody has to collect them before demolition proper starts. Both need deciding before the job, not during.
If it is arranged in advance it works. If it is left until the day, everything goes in the container because that is the fastest option in the moment.
A Realistic Separation Plan
For a normal renovation, this is about as much separation as is worth doing.

Four piles and a container. That is the whole system, and it captures nearly all of the recoverable value without turning a renovation into a sorting exercise.
Anything more granular tends not to survive contact with an actual job. People sort carefully on day one and throw everything in the container by day four, which is why a simple plan that gets followed beats a thorough one that does not.
The Local Piece
Springfield is in southwest Missouri, and local recovery infrastructure is decent for the materials that have established routes.
Concrete and metal both have routes here, and scrap yards operate across the region. That makes the separation advice practical rather than theoretical, which is not true everywhere.
The realistic expectation for a normal residential renovation, though, is that mixed debris goes to landfill and the recovery happens in what you separate before it reaches the container. That is not a criticism of any hauler. It is the economics of sorting.
Asking about dedicated containers is worthwhile on any job with volume. Springfield MO dumpster companies and other regional operators will generally quote clean concrete or clean metal loads differently from mixed debris, which is the clearest sign that separation genuinely changes the disposal route.
Why Any of This Is Worth Bothering With
Two honest reasons, and neither is really about the environment on its own.
Separating clean concrete or clean metal frequently costs less than mixed disposal, because the disposal route is cheaper for the hauler and that gets passed on. Metal can pay outright. So the economic case stands up on its own for anyone with real volume.
The second is that reuse saves buying things. A cabinet run in good condition, a working appliance, a solid door, decent lumber. Somebody wants those, and quite often the person who wants them is you, six months into a different project.
Neither argument requires caring much about diversion rates. They just happen to point the same way, which is the useful thing about this particular decision.
The Short Version
Concrete, metal, clean wood and cardboard have real recovery routes. Drywall, insulation, carpet and treated wood mostly do not.
Mixing is what removes the route, because sorting a mixed load costs more than the material is worth. Whatever gets recycled is almost always decided by what you kept separate during the job.
Pull out metal, anything reusable and anything hazardous before the container arrives. Ask about a dedicated container if you have real volume of a single material, because it frequently costs less as well as diverting more.
