How Often Should You Check Your Storage?

More and more Americans have turned to self-storage services over the last few years. In the last few decades, Americans have started to migrate toward the West and South omaking storage services vital as they manage their move. In addition, with rising wealth, Americans simply own more stuff and they need some place to put it. Storage units have become a vital part of American life and so, managing our storage units is so important. After storing your property, you have to check on their storage units to make sure everything is okay. As a rule of thumb, you should check on your storage unit once a month, or once every two months. However, there are a number of factors that will regulate how frequently you should check in on your things.

What is Safety & Securities Like?

The best storage facilities have very high security and safety and security standards, and so, you won’t find yourself needing to check in on your property all that much. So the first question you have to ask yourself is, “How good is the safety and security at your storage facility?”.

The less safe and secure the facility is, the more frequently you have to check in on your storage facility. The top facilities all have working, 24/7 CCTV surveillance, an on-site security team, regular security patrols with dogs, a manned entry point, access fobs for all entrants in vehicles, electronic gate access, alarmed perimeter fencing, and other such features. They are built to make it very hard for robbers to get in. The harder they make it, the more safe and secure the facility.

If your storage facility does not have this level of security, then you should consider visiting it at least once a week to make sure that everything is in order. Or, you should think about getting your own self-storage pods, and locating them near you, where you can check in on them and possibly even have them in your residence for better security.

Consider the Weather

Another factor to consider is the weather. Extreme weather conditions make it more likely that your belongings may be disturbed in some way.

The best storage facilities have climate-controlled storage units, so that the climate within the storage units remains constant regardless of what is going on outside the facility. However, under the most extreme weather conditions, even these high-grade facilities may fail. So before getting a storage unit, you need to consider the weather in the area and the aptness of the climate control features, to determine how frequently you are likely to have to check in on the unit.

So, at the least you should prepare to check in on your storage unit if there has been a significant change in the area’s weather or climate. So if there is an earthquake, severe thunderstorm, major rainfall, a big storm, etc, you should by all means check in on your storage unit. Pests may arise as a function of changes in the weather, so having pest control is important. (Pest control can also arise due to the type of goods you have or the area the facility is located in.)
