A Future for Floating Homes

Between the traditional home and the houseboat are floating villages that sit on the shore and rise or fall with the tide. “In the Netherlands” Yale Environment 360 reports, “they are often prefabricated, square-shaped, three-story townhouses built offsite with conventional materials.” This innovation is being replicated elsewhere from Norway to Maldives as coastal communities adapt their lives to rising sea level. Dutch officials are working to improve zoning laws in order to allow floating homes to be built.
