Brickbat: He Doesn’t See Color

Fort Lauderdale, Florida has fired Larry Scirotto, its police chief, less than a year following his hiring. The claim was that Scirotto had made discriminatory hiring decisions and promoted whites. Three months after Scirotto was appointed, the city retained a law firm that would investigate numerous complaints. The law firm compiled a report that Scirotto did not consider hiring a white male with 20 years of experience to fill a job. Instead, he focused on two black men and asked, “which is the better?” Scirotto did not ask which was the blacker. He did admit to showing a wall with photographs of command staff members and saying that it was too white. “I’m changing that,” he said. Scirotto indicated that he intends to file a wrongful-termination lawsuit.
