Rick Wells of Manatee County in Florida said that the 12-year-old recorded a school battle and broke no laws. After one of his school resource officers grabbed the girl, the deputy arrested her and tried to make her give up her cellphone and delete the video. School staff recorded the incident and video shows the deputy’s bodycam recording it. Although the deputy is skeptical, he doesn’t seem to be able to get advice from his supervisor. The deputy was simply following what his staff and principal were saying to him. Wells explained that although he wasn’t sure what they were discussing, he kept looking at the phone and the recording. Deputies were told by the sheriff’s Office not to enforce school policies after the charges against the girl were dropped. There is no word yet on whether or not the detained deputy will be disciplined.
