Federal court ordered that the University of Iowa pay $1.93million in legal fees for the lawyers representing two Christian student groups against whom the university had been found to discriminate. Business Leaders in Christ was deregistered by the university. This requires leaders to adhere to Christian ethics and not engage in sexual activity with anyone other than a married couple. One gay student claimed that the requirement prevented him from being elected to the leadership role in the club. Other student groups that demanded religious belief to be able to lead were deregistered by the school, such as Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. This was also challenging its deregistration. This discrimination was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Court of Appeals, 8th Circuit in July.
