Poll: Majority Of Americans Say Government Should Do Less – Not More

Gallup’s latest poll revealed that the majority of Americans believe government is too generous.

This marked a major change in poll results from the same survey conducted last year. It also comes as Congress Democrats and the Biden Administration are determined to significantly increase the government’s involvement in daily life for Americans.

Biggest Drop In ‘Faith In Government’ Comes From Independents

“Americans have shifted back to favoring a more hands-off approach for government in addressing the nation’s problems after a rare endorsement of a more active role last year,” Gallup noted.

Gallup observed, “Currently, 52% say the government is doing too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses, while 43% want the government to do more to solve the country’s problems.”

“In contrast, a record-high 54% of U.S. adults last year said The government must do more to address problems,” the poll added.

The poll that 54 percent wanted to see more government intervention for 2020 was conducted in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and protests against racial violence.

Gallup found that Americans wanted less government intervention from all political parties, the largest decrease coming from independents.

The government has been accused of overreaching by a staggering fifty-seven per cent of independents.

This view was held by only 38% of independents last year. That’s almost a 20 point slip in independents’ view of government action.

Other 38 percent believed the government should have more power. This opinion was held by 56 percent in 2020.

That’s an 18 point slip.

It is not surprising that 78 percent believe the government should do more. Only 18% say it does too little.

Gallup: ‘Americans Say They Prefer Fewer Government Services And Lower Taxes’

A mirror image of the other, 80 percent say that government is doing too little while only 15% believe it should.

Gallup also noted, “Americans’ preference for a limited government role is also evident when they are asked to consider the trade-offs between taxes and government services.”

“Given a choice, half of Americans say they prefer fewer government services and lower taxes, while 19% want higher taxes and more services,” the poll found. “Twenty-nine percent want taxes and services as they are now.

Gallup polled 1,005 adult respondents between Sept. 1-17, 2021.
